The marketer behind Tableau's brand

Elissa Fink was chief marketing officer of Tableau Software, the business intelligence company, for more than eleven years. Her University of Washington Foster School of Business biography dates the role to 2007 through 2018, and a USC Marshall event description says she led all marketing strategy and execution as the company grew from a pre-IPO startup with about $5 million in annual revenue to a public company above $1 billion.[1][2]

A TechCrunch contributor profile credits her with helping build a consumer-like brand and with pioneering the use of community in business-to-business marketing. A 2020 episode of The Bridge podcast adds that she built Tableau's marketing team from the ground up and oversaw worldwide strategic planning and execution, including through the company's listing on the New York Stock Exchange.[3][4]

Career before Tableau

USC Marshall says Fink began her career selling advertising for The Wall Street Journal, then held marketing, product management and product engineering roles at IXI, now part of Equifax, and Tele Atlas, now part of TomTom, among other technology companies.[2]

The Foster School's fuller list places her as executive vice president of marketing and product management at Claritas from 1990 to 2000, senior director of marketing at TopTier Software from 2000 to 2001, vice president of marketing and product management at Tele Atlas from 2001 to 2004, and chief marketing officer and executive vice president at IXI Corp from 2004 to 2007, before she moved to Tableau.[1]

Education and honors

Fink earned a bachelor's degree at Santa Clara University and an MBA with a marketing focus at the University of Southern California. The Foster School biography lists two honors, CMO of the Year in 2015 and PR Executive of the Year in 2014; it does not say who granted them, so they are noted only as listed.[1][2]

Boards, advising and teaching

After leaving Tableau she turned to board seats and advisory work. TechCrunch lists Dataiku, Pantheon, Qumulo, Seekout, Uberflip and Intellimize among the technology companies she advises, and says she serves on not-for-profit boards supporting environmental, women's health and low-income housing causes.[3]

The Foster School biography, which may reflect a different date, names her as a current advisor to Qumulo, Outreach.io and Amperity, and lists board service with WTIA, Operation Fistula, the UW Center for Sales & Marketing Strategy and the USC Corporate Advisory Board, plus membership of the Forbes Communication Council. She is an affiliate instructor of marketing and international business at UW Foster, with business-to-business marketing as her stated expertise.[1]

Public talks and views

On February 27, 2019 she spoke at USC Marshall in a series titled Leading Voices in Business, on the subject Building Brands with Data: A CMO's Journey. The event page describes her as semi-retired at that point and still advising and serving on boards.[2]

The Bridge podcast summary of her 2020 conversation lists several themes: facilitating digital sales conversations wherever the purchase happens, starting with a single key metric before expanding data use, returning to why a company exists to get through hard periods, and asking good questions to learn priorities. The summary is written by the show rather than quoting her directly.[4]

Why she matters

Fink's record is a case study in building a B2B brand around a product people want to talk about. Tableau's growth from a few million dollars in revenue to a public billion-dollar business, with community as a central marketing channel, is the result most often attached to her in the sources, and her board, advisory and classroom roles carry that experience to newer data and software companies.[2][3]
