Jim Routh
A veteran financial-services security chief who ran programs at Aetna and MassMutual is now chief trust officer at identity-security company Saviynt.
Current role: chief trust officer at Saviynt
Jim Routh is chief trust officer at Saviynt, an identity and access governance company. Saviynt's leadership page lists him in that role, and a Security Magazine podcast published on June 30, 2026 identifies him the same way. Saviynt's page also describes him as an advisor to Saviynt and several other cybersecurity companies, and as someone who advises and invests in cyber-focused venture funds.[5][6]
In the Security Magazine conversation, Routh described trust as an integral part of an enterprise's brand and said organizations build it by sharing more information voluntarily. He proposed measuring trust by comparing what an organization is required to disclose with what it shares proactively, with the gap showing whether trust is rising or falling.[6]
Security leadership in order
Routh has more than 30 years in information technology and security as a practitioner, management consultant and leader of technology, analytics and security functions at global firms. Saviynt's page lists his chief security or information security officer posts at American Express, DTCC, KPMG, Aetna, CVS and MassMutual. NetSPI and Foundry add that he was global head of application and mobile security at JPMorgan Chase, and NetSPI says he earlier served as an IT leader at American Express and as a management consultant for more than a decade serving financial services clients.[5][2][3]
BankInfoSecurity's March 25, 2020 interview, for which he was introduced as CISO of MassMutual, discussed how he handled business continuity with his team and supply chain partners during the COVID-19 pandemic, the increase in threat actor activity, and advice for security leaders in a crisis. None of the pages gives exact start or end dates for his roles.[1]
Aetna and converged security
NetSPI says that at Aetna he developed one of the most mature converged security programs in the private sector, meaning one that brings several security disciplines together under one program. Foundry's speaker profile and BankInfoSecurity both list him as chief security officer there.[2][3][1]
Industry roles and honors
Foundry's conference profile lists him as chairman of the NH-ISAC board and a member of the FS-ISAC board, and as co-author of an FS-ISAC white paper on third-party software security controls. It also lists the 2009 BITS Leadership Award for leading the supply chain working group that worked with NIST and the Department of the Treasury, 2007 Information Security Executive of the Year for the Northeast, and 2014 North American Information Security Executive of the Year in healthcare. NetSPI and Saviynt describe the health-sector role as five years as board chair of H-ISAC.[3][2][5]
Boards, advisory work and teaching
NetSPI lists current boards at Supply Wisdom, GrammaTech, Acceptto and ZeroNorth, all early-stage security and risk software companies. Saviynt's page names Supply Wisdom, GrammaTech, Savvy, the Accountable Digital Identity Association and the Global Resiliency Federation, which indicates his board seats have changed over time. It also says he has prepared cybersecurity education for National Association of Corporate Directors members and is an ICIT Fellow and adjunct faculty member at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, where he teaches cybersecurity.[2][5]
In November 2023 SecurityScorecard named him senior advisor and chairman of its Cybersecurity Advisory Board to help shape the next generation of security ratings. Its chief executive said Routh had been one of the company's first customers almost a decade earlier.[4]
Why he matters
Routh is one of a small group of security chiefs who have run programs at several large regulated companies and then moved into boards, advisory and investing roles. NetSPI credits him as an industry leader in digital transformation and in using data science for cybersecurity, and his public work on board education and trust measurement carries those lessons beyond any single employer.[2][5][6]
On The Executive List
Jim Routh is ranked No. 58 on The Executive List (October 2026) in the Chief Information Officers discipline. The list row shows him as MassMutual CISO; Saviynt and other public bios describe him as a former MassMutual CISO who is now Saviynt's chief trust officer and sits on security-company boards. The ranking reflects The Executive Review's own editorial Trending Score; it is not an outside award, and placement on the list is never sold. View the October 2026 edition.
