Atif Rafiq
A veteran of Amazon, McDonald's, Volvo Cars and MGM Resorts, he now runs an AI workspace company, sits on public-company boards and wrote the bestseller Decision Sprint.
Founder of Ritual
Atif Rafiq is co-founder and chief executive of Ritual, which a 2026 conference biography describes as an AI-native workspace that connects strategy to projects, prototypes and product requirements. His LinkedIn profile, which lists him in the Greater Chicago area, characterizes the company's pitch more narrowly as a context layer for AI agents and says he uses it to help build what he calls frontier firms.[1][6]
Ritual follows a long corporate career, but it is not his first start-up. Volvo's 2016 announcement of his hire already noted that he had co-founded and run a start-up earlier, and that he had advised, invested in and served on the boards of more than ten start-ups.[3]
The conference biography says the company positions itself as an alternative to traditional strategy consulting, helping organizations reach faster and more precise decisions. That framing follows directly from his book on decision making, described below.[1][5]
Digital-native roots: Amazon and Yahoo
Rafiq began at digital-native companies. When McDonald's hired him in 2013, the trade press recorded his earlier jobs: general manager of Kindle Direct Publishing at Amazon, and at Yahoo both general manager of its local division and a global product strategy role in Yahoo News. Volvo's later announcement added AOL to the list of technology companies where he held general management positions.[3][7]
His profile says he has more than twenty-five years across Silicon Valley and the Fortune 500, and that he led global profit-and-loss, transformation and innovation work across thousands of employees.[1]
McDonald's: the first chief digital officer
McDonald's named Rafiq its first chief digital officer in October 2013, in a newly created global role. Marketing Dive reported that the hire supported the company's push to grow e-commerce, modernize the restaurant experience and connect with mobile consumers.[7]
His conference biography presents the post as the first chief digital officer in Fortune 500 history, which is his own framing; the 2013 coverage describes it as McDonald's first-ever such role. When Volvo hired him, the automotive press said he had built the company's digital efforts from scratch.[1][3][7]
Volvo Cars
Volvo Cars announced on December 1, 2016 that Rafiq would join its executive management team on January 2, 2017 as senior vice president of IT and chief digital officer. The announcement gave his age as 43.[3]
The role covered Volvo's digital transformation, including how customers buy, drive, are entertained by and service its cars, along with consumer-facing applications, digital touchpoints and enterprise systems. By the time MGM hired him, Skift described his Volvo title as chief digital officer and global chief innovation officer. Flutter's later board announcement gave it as chief digital and global chief information officer.[3][8][2]
MGM Resorts and the move to boards
MGM Resorts International named Rafiq president of commercial and growth on April 3, 2019, with a May start date and a direct line to chief executive Jim Murren. Skift reported that he would develop new customer experiences, business models and revenue streams, launch digital businesses and oversee sales and loyalty, supporting the company's MGM 2020 plan.[8]
Trade press later reported that he had stepped down from the post, without giving a reason or an effective date.[4]
Flutter Entertainment appointed him an independent non-executive director and member of its Risk and Sustainability Committee effective December 10, 2021. Chair Gary McGann tied the appointment to the board's renewal program and to Rafiq's experience in digital, innovation and technology-led transformation. The announcement also noted that he had been a non-executive director of KINS Technology Group since August 2020.[2]
His 2026 conference biography lists him on the boards of Flutter, Mister Car Wash and Clearcover, and says he formerly sat on the betMGM board and advised Slack and Snapchat. His LinkedIn profile mentions Snap's client council and Parade Ventures.[1][6]
Decision Sprint and writing
Rafiq's book Decision Sprint: The New Way to Innovate into the Unknown and Move from Strategy to Action was first published on April 25, 2023 as a 288-page hardcover. It lays out a method for the uncertain early stage of ideas and initiatives, then carries them through alignment, decision-making and execution.[5]
Its central argument is that a company's collaboration and decision systems can matter as much as the talent it hires. The book covers structured sprints, meeting workflows, calibrating rather than controlling as a leadership approach, and the role of software and AI in performance management, drawing on his time at Amazon, McDonald's and Volvo.[5]
The conference biography says the book was a Wall Street Journal bestseller and that he has been named to the Thinkers50 list. It also says he writes the Re:wire newsletter, with more than 100,000 subscribers, and has over 500,000 LinkedIn followers; these are self-reported audience figures.[1]
Recent activity
He was scheduled to speak at 4YFN in Barcelona on March 3, 2026 on navigating pivots, people and AI-driven scale. His LinkedIn profile lists Booth School of Business among his education.[1][6]
Why he matters
Rafiq is one of the few executives to have run digital for a global restaurant chain, a global car maker and a casino resort company in succession. Each job asked the same question of a different customer base: how a legacy brand uses technology to change the way it sells and serves.[1][3][7][8]
His move from operator to author, board director and founder of an AI decision workspace is a clear example of how that experience is being turned into products and governance advice.[1][2][5]
