Who she is today

Claire Hughes Johnson was Stripe's chief operating officer from 2014 to 2021 and remains a corporate officer and advisor at Stripe. She is the author of Scaling People: Tactics for Management and Company Building, published by Stripe Press in 2023, and sits on the boards of Ameresco, The Atlantic, Aurora Innovation and HubSpot. She is also a trustee and the current board president of Milton Academy.[1][2]

Early career and education

She earned a BA in English and American literature from Brown University in 1994 and an MBA from Yale School of Management in 2001. Before business school she worked for Massachusetts Attorney General Scott Harshbarger and served as deputy campaign manager on his 1998 run for governor. After her MBA she joined Braun Consulting, working on technology strategy for clients that included DirecTV, the New York Times and Dow Jones.[1]

Google

Hughes Johnson joined Google in 2004 and spent about a decade there leading business teams. Her Yale profile lists operational, revenue and product roles, including vice president of what became the Waymo self-driving car project; Stripe Press's author note adds AdWords and Google Offers. She has said Google grew from roughly 1,800 employees when she arrived to almost 60,000 when she left, and a separate profile says she led a sales team of 2,300 people.[1][2][3][4]

Stripe

She joined Stripe in 2014, when it was a startup of fewer than 200 people. Her first title was Chief of Business Operations, and she later took the chief operating officer title. Over roughly seven years in the executive team, Stripe grew into a company of thousands of employees; published accounts of the final headcount vary, so none is stated here. She oversaw business operations, sales, marketing, customer support, risk, real estate and people functions, including recruiting and HR.[1][2][4]

She stepped back from the day-to-day COO role in 2021 and stayed on as a corporate officer and advisor.[1]

How she thinks about scaling

In a First Round interview she describes high performers as learning organisms, meaning people who stay curious and keep improving. For hiring executives she asks candidates to explain how their current team is structured and how each member came to the role, and in reference calls she asks how the candidate compares with others the referee has worked with and how the referee would help them succeed as a manager. She advises managers to act as explorers rather than lecturers, starting feedback with questions and letting employees assess their own work first.[4]

In a talk covered by Notable Capital she argues that founders should write down their beliefs, values and operating principles early, treating it as important but not urgent. She suggests that startups below about 150 people may struggle to attract experienced executives from large companies, and that a bridge leader with some hands-on building experience can help. On retention she points to purpose, mastery and autonomy rather than only pay and perks.[3]

Scaling People

Her book is a practical manual of about 480 pages covering foundational documents, strategic and financial planning, hiring, team development, and feedback and performance systems, with worksheets and templates. Yale's profile reports that Bloomberg and The Economist named it among the best books of the year. Sources differ on the exact publication month in 2023, so only the year is given.[1][2]

Why she matters

Hughes Johnson is one of the few operators to document, in book form, how a company's management systems were built through a period of rapid growth. Her work has become a common reference for founders and operating executives writing their own management playbooks.[2][3]
