Tim Campos
A three-time CIO who ran IT at KLA and Facebook, then founded the calendar startup Woven, was reported in 2022 to have taken over Apple's Information Systems and Technology organization.
Apple's CIO
Timothy Campos was reported by Bloomberg in November 2022 to be Apple's new chief information officer, leading its Information Systems and Technology department, known as IS&T. The group runs the infrastructure behind Apple's online services, customer support and website, and 9to5Mac noted that Apple refers to it internally as a nerve center. He succeeded Mary Demby, who was retiring after about three decades at the company.[1][2]
Trade press pointed out that the Apple job was his third as a CIO, after earlier posts at KLA and Facebook. Later profiles still list him in the role.[2][3]
Engineer to CIO
Campos began as a software engineer. A Berkeley Haas profile and a Haas news item say his career ran through Sybase and Silicon Graphics before he moved into IT leadership at KLA-Tencor, the semiconductor equipment supplier. At KLA he became, at 33, the youngest CIO of any Fortune 500 company, according to the Haas executive MBA profile.[4][5]
Facebook, 2010 to 2016
Campos joined Facebook as CIO in 2010 and led its IT strategy until about 2016. In the IT Visionaries podcast, he recalled that he came to the job while considering a startup with friends, and that when he arrived Facebook had about 1,400 employees and an IT department of roughly 40 people. His first major task was fixing a calendar system that Mark Zuckerberg wanted repaired within a week, and he found it poorly built.[3][6]
He described his main objective as raising productivity across the company, and said Facebook built many of its own internal tools rather than buying off-the-shelf software. He has argued that a CIO must understand how every department works, which makes the role closer to general management than to systems administration.[6]
In 2013 the Bay Area CIO Awards, sponsored by the Silicon Valley Business Journal and the San Francisco Business Times, gave him a Lifetime Achievement Award; he was one of two CIOs honored that way and one of 17 top Bay Area CIOs recognized that year.[4]
Woven
After leaving Facebook in 2016 he founded Woven, a calendar and scheduling company. The idea, as he explained on IT Visionaries, grew out of his view that a calendar records only dates and times, while teams also need agendas, action items, summaries and a history of past meetings. He framed the product around a conviction that time is an organization's most valuable asset, so tools that save it pay for themselves.[3][6]
In May 2021 Bloomberg reported that Slack had acquired Woven, adding calendar features to compete with Google and Microsoft, with terms undisclosed and the investment made through Slack's SlackFund. Slack was later bought by Salesforce. Trade coverage described Campos as Woven's most recent chief executive when Apple hired him.[1][2][7]
Education
Campos is a graduate of the Berkeley-Columbia Executive MBA program at the Haas School of Business, class of 2011. In the program profile he said it helped him understand the reasons behind business concepts, comparing it to seeing a sheet of music versus hearing it played, and singled out corporate finance, macroeconomics and capital markets as the subjects that deepened his judgment.[5]
Why he matters
Few technology leaders have run internal IT at three companies, and fewer have also started a product company aimed at the same productivity problems they managed as a CIO. His record is a reminder that the corporate IT chief at a platform company sets the tools and pace that a very large workforce depends on. For readers in information technology leadership, his path from engineer to young Fortune 500 CIO to founder to Apple's IT head is among the more distinctive in the field.[1][3][5]
